What Is ULV Fogging? Equipment, Uses and Limitations

A practical explanation of ultra-low-volume application and why a fogger does not establish product suitability, coverage or treatment results.

ULV stands for ultra-low volume. It describes equipment that disperses a liquid into fine droplets. It is an application method, not a disinfectant claim and not a universal solution for buildings.

The liquid and the method must match

A disinfectant suitable for wiping cannot automatically be used in a fogger. Its directions need to support the intended application and environment. Equipment compatibility is only part of that decision.

Ask for the proposed product and method before booking. If those details are not yet selected, a promise about suitability or return time is premature.

Why assessment comes first

Occupancy, ventilation, electronics, sensitive materials and access restrictions can affect whether the method is appropriate. A busy reception and an unoccupied storage area do not create the same conditions.

Droplets entering a room also do not demonstrate that every object receives the necessary application. High-touch points can still require a targeted surface process, and soil may need removal beforehand.

What ULV does not replace

  • Cleaning that removes dirt and residues.
  • Investigation of moisture or a persistent odor source.
  • Surface compatibility checks.
  • Product-specific contact time and aftercare instructions.

Consider the alternative

A controlled manual method may be clearer for a defined inventory of handles, switches and shared controls. Ask why ULV is being proposed for your environment rather than treating fogging as the professional standard by default.
